    Venue

    The 7ath Irish Discworld Convention will be returning to Cork, at the wonderful Cork International Hotel. This was a popular choice with our 2015, 2017 and 2019 members, with many people praising the hotel's accommodating team, the spacious lobby and the colourful bathrooms. We’re very pleased they’re happy to have us back.

    The hotel is quirky and comfortable, and we think Discworld fans feel right at home here. It's in a great location, just outside of Cork city in the south west of Ireland: less than 5 minutes on foot from the Airport itself, and there are regular buses to and from town. It is fully wheelchair accessible, has a kids’ club, a gym, a hairdressers', and a private cinema. There's a bar menu, lobby menu and restaurant, as well as 24-hour room service. Free parking is available to all residents.

    You can check out the hotel's website.

    Hotel room bookings will be available from 10am on Thursday 20th October 2022!

    Exactly a year in advance - isn't that nice ????

    Thank you all for your patience in booking your hotel rooms! We know that the hotel was completely swamped when the bookings opened, despite us warning them in advance!, and many of you have had difficulty getting through. The popularity of IDWCon is unprecedented for 2023 and, particularly with the nearby Cork Airport Hotel not taking bookings at this time, there was a rush to get rooms booked. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Also, we know that most people were greeted with a warm, friendly Irish welcome, but we were disturbed to hear that some responses were curt and far less gracious. Please be assured, we relayed this feedback to the hotel and they are very apologetic. They will be following up with extra training and assure us that we will all receive the warm, professional welcome we have come to expect from the hotel when we arrive next October.

    We know that most of you managed to make the booking you wanted but some people ran into difficulties. There are now some updates on hotel bookings that may or may not be relevant to you depending on your current status:

    If you are happy with your room booking:

    Perfect! No need to do anything more - we’ll see you next year!

    You booked a room but were unable to get the Thursday and/or Monday night:

    The hotel only reserves a certain amount of rooms at the IDWCon-rate and the Fri-Sun are the most popular, so had more rooms allocated at that rate. They have now freed up some extra rooms for us at the IDWCon rate, so if you would like to extend your stay you can ring them now to extend your booking. Please note: if your room is not available at IDWCon rate for the night you wish to book, you can still request to book the room at the ‘best available room rate’. This rate will be more expensive than our rates, and changes according to the season, but it could be available for you.

    You did not get a room and would like one:

    The hotel is setting up a Room Booking Waiting List for people who missed out on our rooms. If you wish to be on this list you must ring them directly. Also, please note, while our IDWCon rate rooms are sold out, we do not have exclusivity with the hotel, hence they have a small amount of rooms still available at the best available room rate. Please note this will be substantially more expensive than our rooms and the rate will likely differ between nights. If you are happy to pay this, please state this when you ring Reservations. You can book a room at the best available rate and ALSO ask to be put on the waiting list. Then if one of our rooms becomes available, you will be assigned that room instead.

    Please note the hotel does not have any more availability for accessible rooms. If you join the hotel's Room Booking Waiting List and require an accessible room, please be very clear on your requirements with the hotel.

    We hope this is clear.

    The most important thing is that you liaise directly with the hotel in regards to your room booking. We do not make bookings on anyone’s behalf, nor do we know anything about the Room Booking Waiting List. To ring the hotel you should call 00353 21 454 9800 and speak to Reservations. Please note that Reservations work office hours Mon-Fri 9am-5pm so this is the best time to call. You can also email the hotel if you prefer at info@corkinternationalhotel.combut the hotel has specifically told us that they will respond quicker to phone queries.

    We know some of you are anxious that you did not get a room booked. Please remember that the Convention is still almost a full year away and some people will decide not to attend. If for any reason you cannot attend and wish to sell your membership to someone on our Waiting List, please email members@idwcon.org . Please note you will need to contact the hotel directly to cancel your room booking.

    We can’t wait to greet you all in Cork next year!!
    Rates
    The room rates we have negotiated with the hotel are as follows:
    • Signature Rooms - Double/twin room, double occupancy, B&B: €130 per night;
    • Signature Rooms - Double/twin room, single occupancy, B&B: €120 per night;
    • Signature Rooms - Double/twin room, double occupancy: €110 per night (room only);
    • Family room: €30 per night extra, based on 2 adults & 2 children;
    • Deluxe Room: €30 per night extra;
    • Executive Rooms: €35 per night extra;
    • Triple occupancy rooms: €35 per night extra;
    Please note: when you call the hotel you must provide card details, but there is no deposit taken when you book the room. However, the hotel requires an authorisation on a credit card of the total amount due, plus €50 per room per night, which is a hold of funds and can be used as credit for any incidental charges. Unfortunately, they are unable to preauthorise Debit Cards, which means that this payment will be taken from the (Debit Card) account on checkin. Although their policy is per room, per night, the hotel have confirmed that as IDWCon attendees you will be charged no more than €100 deposit for your stay on checkin at the hotel. When the time comes, please do not check in to the hotel online as the full €50 per room per stay will automatically be taken from your card. Any money not used against this deposit will be refunded to your card on checkout.

    Many attendees reduce costs by sharing a room. Please keep an eye on our Facebook group for such suggestions and conversations.

    Alternative Accommodation
    The Cork International Hotel can accommodate almost all of our members, but people have often sought out alternative venues in which to hang their hats when the day is done.

    In past years, many attendees have enjoyed staying at the neighbouring venue - the Cork Airport Hotel. Unfortunately, the Cork Airport Hotel is not taking bookings at the moment. The hotel is currently being used to house refugees who have been forced to flee their homes due to the war in the Ukraine. We cannot say if the Cork Airport Hotel will be taking bookings by October 2023. If the past few years have taught us anything, it's that anything can happen in 12 months. I'm sure we all hope that the world is a better place and the hotel is back to functioning as normal by October 2023. We're sorry, but we hope you understand that we cannot give any indication as to when it might/will open up.

    If you fancy being a proper RoundWorld Tourist, Cork itself is a wonderful, vibrant city and has many accommodation options that will help you see a bit more of our fair city. There is a bus stop (route 226) right outside the hotel that will bring you straight into town in approximately 20 minutes. And if you miss the bus, we're right beside the airport - with plenty of taxis nearby!
    For those looking for budget friendly options Shiela’s Hostel and Bru Hostel are both located near one another in the city centre, and they are close to the train and bus stations.

    Accessible Rooms
    As many of you know, the Cork International Hotel is a very accessible hotel. If you have specific requirements please email our Accessibility Officer at accessibility@idwcon.org before Friday 30th September. You will be asked to fill in a form detailing your specific needs. Please note that this does not guarantee you a room in the hotel and we do not book any rooms on attendees behalf, but we would like to ascertain that we have enough accessible rooms to allow everyone to attend and enjoy the con. If you miss out on an accessible room in the Cork International Hotel, we can help arrange a suitable room in another venue in the city centre.
    Please advise the hotel on booking if you require a cooler or fridge in your room.
