Membership to the Irish Discworld Convention is what you buy instead of a ticket. It entitles you to entry to all events at the Convention (except the Gala dinner or other ticketed events)
So, what is the Irish Discworld Convention?
The IDWCon is a gathering of people who like Terry Pratchett’s Discworld book series, and his non-Discworld gems, organised for fans*, by fans. We get together in a hotel for four days every two years (2023 will be the 7ath Irish DWCon), go to talks, play games and quizzes, watch a talent show, chat to people who share our sense of humour and generally have a great time. Whether you have followed the story of the Discworld from its inception, have read 'a few' or have not yet finished reading your first story, IDWCon welcomes you to meet with those involved in the creation of the Discworld, pick up souvenirs, books or memories, and share your enjoyment with other Discworld fans through chatting, going to events, and playing games. Attending a gathering of Discworld fans has been described as “meeting friends you didn’t know you had”.
Our attendees come from all over the world, and from just down the road. A lot of people come for the first time, alone and confused, not really sure what it’s all about, and they leave with firm friends and a promise to return for the next one. We hope you’ll come and satisfy your curiosity if this is all new to you. And we hope to welcome many of last time’s members back again.
The Convention is run by a group of fans, who volunteer their spare time to organise every last detail. It’s a not-for-profit event, so all the profit beyond what we need to run the convention goes to our chosen charities. We raise money for them in a variety of ways, including a Charity Auction and selling an eclectic mix of IDWCon-exclusive Discworld merchandise and memorabilia.
Where and when will it be held?
The next IDWCon will be held in the Cork International Hotel from 20-23rd October 2023.
2023? Did I read that right? Why not 2022?
Yup! IDWCon is held every second year. It's that fabulous it takes 2 years to plan!
Sounds great - how do I attend?
To attend IDWCon you must purchase a Membership. Memberships are available now: purchased yours here: Memberships.
What does my membership give me?
Membership gives you access to all of the scheduled events over the weekend except the Gala Dinner (and possibly another ticketed Programme Item yet to be confirmed).
What about accommodation, food etc.?
Membership does not include food or accommodation. We have negotiated an excellent room rate with the hotel and they will provide some budget food options. Please do not book a hotel room until your have bought your membership and we announce rooms are available.
Why are memberships more expensive than 2019?
A lot has happened in the world since March 2019. Due to some extra costs we have had to increase membership prices a little to keep the convention viable. We have tried to keep this to a minimum - particularly for our concession rates. We hope this increase will not deter anyone from attending.
I'm thinking of attending but I've never been to a convention before - what should I expect?
Lots of fun, frolics and friendship! We pride ourselves on being a welcoming convention and absolutely LOVE newbies!!! Have a look through our Newbies guide, keep an eye out for the Programming Items and join our social media to learn more on what to expect!
October 2023 is AGES away - I'll pick up my membership the week before...
At your peril!!! IDWCon 2015, 2017 and 2019 all sold out well in advance of the convention. Unlike other large conventions, we are limited to 300 attendees. We do not know for sure if IDWCon2023 will sell out fast, but - best not to chance it!
Do I have to wear a costume?
Absolutely not! Some people cosplay and some do not - it is entirely up to yourself. Plus not all costumes are created equal! Some people create beautiful hand-made costumes that wow us all, but many love to run around in a witches hat for the weekend - both are perfectly viable as cosplay! Cosplay is great fun for those who enjoy it - and it is a great conversation starter, but many people enjoy the whole weekend in casual gear. Please do note that if you attend the Gala Dinner it is either formal or costume dress - if you turn up in your jeans and tee to that one you might feel a tad underdressed! (but still, no-one would stop you!)
What's the Gala Dinner?
The Gala Dinner is a formal sit-down meal hosted in the hotel on the Sunday evening. The dinner is not included in your membership and must be bought separately.
I have reduced mobility - will be able to attend?
Yes. The Cork International Hotel has a number of fully accessible rooms and all areas of the convention are wheelchair accessible. We also offer a Green Dots policy to assist those who may need it to make the weekend more comfortable for you. If you feel you would benefit from a Green Dot, you may obtain one from the Registration Desk. You do not need to provide any reason to get a Green Dot - if you feel you need it, you get it. Please see our Accessibility Policy or contact the Chairs at chair@idwcon.org with any specific questions or concerns you may have.
More FAQs are to follow but if you have a specific query please email chair@idwcon.org with your questions - we're happy to help!
*and for future fans! We simply love newbies who have been dragged along and haven't had the joy of finishing their first DW book yet! Oh the recommendations we will have for you ❤️❤️❤️
